In 1982 the students of Florida elected the panther (Felis concolor coryi) as state animal of FL. A large

predator (can grow more than 6’ in length), they play an important role in the ecosystem. Florida panthers

were persecuted to near-extinction out of fear (folklore refers as "catamounts"). It is on the federal endangered

species list, 1967, and the state’s of endangered list in 1973.
