The Oregon swallowtail butterfly (Papilio oregonius) was designated as Oregons’s official state insect in 1979. This strikingly beautiful butterfly is a true native of the Northwest.  The Oregon Swallowtail butterfly can be seen in the lower sagebrush canyons of the Columbia River and its tributaries, including the Snake River drainage.
